5 Thoughts to Have During the Holidays

Hi! Winter break is fabulous. I say that as I am snuggled on the couch watching a Hallmark Christmas movie. So yeah, pretty much living the good life. I’m starting finishing up Christmas shopping tomorrow, so wish me luck as I fight the crowds!

I feel like I write these kinds of posts a lot, but I just feel pushed to write about simple ways to be happier. As much as I hope these posts help you, they are so therapeutic to me as I write them!

Keep reading if you want to know some thoughts I’ll be keeping in mind this holiday season to be happier and more content!

thoughts holiday season

1 | IMPERFECTION + CHRISTMAS = STILL CHRISTMAS

News flash, the holiday season comes around every year, no matter how imperfectly your tree was decorated or how much you procrastinated buying gifts. Your friends and family will love you just as much as they did in July as they do in January, even if you forgot to send out Christmas cards or cook the perfect dinner. So relax and have fun and bake Christmas cookies in the shape of the elder wand. Photographic evidence circa 2010 thanks to old Facebook albums included below.

And an “18” cookie for our dating anniversary. We were 4 MONTHS IN at this point. S’cute, am I right?

2 | THE BEST WAY TO SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER IS SINGING LOUD FOR ALL TO HEAR

Okay I’m only kind of kidding. (Not really though) Keep this in mind when spirits aren’t as high. There aren’t many things that a little Christmas music can’t solve! (Dramatic? Maybe. Sometimes true? Definitely.)

3 | I AM THANKFUL FOR THE LIFE I HAVE

This is another mantra you can keep in your mind during the holiday season. Reflecting on the blessings in my life can solve discontentment and put a stop to the comparison game I like to play. *cough-perfect-looking-bloggers-I-follow-on-instagram-cough* I’M SO LUCKY for all that I have and even more so for the people in my life. I hope I don’t sound like too much of a sap, but I think we could all be a little happier this holiday season (and everyday) if we reflected on the good in our lives more often.

4 | PEOPLE MATTER MORE THAN THINGS

I myself know how EASY it is to get swept up in material things, especially during this gifting season. Just remember, people will always be more important than materials. ALWAYS. Think of your friends and family as life’s greatest gifts. (Okay that was pretty cheesy guys. But seriously.)

5 | DON’T WISH AWAY THE YEAR

I am SO guilty of this. But try your best to appreciate every day, and enjoy the year that we are in right now. I find myself using Psalm 118:24 as my mantra sometimes, repeating it in my head when I’m feeling discontent.

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

I find myself impatiently waiting for 2017 (wedding year woohoo!), but in order to really live in the moment, I need to stop wishing away 2016. Does anyone else struggle with living in the moment?
